Off, Standby or Hibernate

There a discussion over at Yugatech asking if people turn off their computers at night. Personally, I’ve been using standby. It’s more convenient to boot it up again from standby rather than wait for it to boot up from a cold start.

The family desktop computer is even set to go to standby when there’s no activity for 30 minutes, which seems to have worked well in terms of the electricity bills. Also, family members usually don’t know if they can turn the computer off since someone else might be doing something and just took a break. Setting it to automatically standby prevents anyone from throwing a fit because their work or what they’re doing was not saved because someone else shut the computer down. Ultimately, it saves energy when not in use.
